PAHIATUA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ■ A meeting of residents interested in securing foe the district the services of a duly qualified medical prao« titioner was held on Priday evening in the Public Hall, There was only a moderate attendance. Mr W. Tosswill was voted to the chair.
Mr Black proposed that a committee be appoinieri to endeavor to secure the residenco of a medical man by advertising the need and prospects of the district in the Wellington, Ohristchuroh, Auckland and Dunedin papers. Seconded bv Mr Ridd.
Mr Reese thought this a work of supererogation, as the distrioc would be sufficiently advertised by the iate painful calamity that had befallen the place, and the evident absence of a doctor on the spot, He thought the wantwouldsoonbe supplied. Mr Job Vile was of opinion that anyone reading the account of the injured in, say Christchurch, would infer that medical attendance'was easily obtainable. He advocated advertising. The motion was then put and carried unanimously, Mr Reese then proposed that it be a recommendation to the committee to approach the County Council with the view ol getting a cottage hospital for the place. Seconded bj Mr Blaok.
Mr Vile said that as a hospital rate would have to be struck, he doubted if the country ratepayers could stand it in their present highly taxed state. Ho thought Woodville might co-operate. The Chairman agreed with the utility of a hospital, but thought the movement premature.
The motion wis then put "and carried,
A collection towards defraying the expenses of the advertisements was then taken up, amounting, to £ll4s Gd.and the proceedings terminated.
