MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An Adjourned Meeting An adjourned meeting of the Masterton Borough Counoil was held last (Wednesday) evening, there being present His Worship }he Mayor and Ciß Heron,'Hessey, Gapper, Feist, E. Chamberlain, Perry, and Dixon. The minutes ot the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE, From the Wellington City Counoil, re the Municipal Association, From William Day, requesting that his name be inserted on the Burgess roll.—Bequest grained. From 8. B.artlett, asking for an extension of time for the completion of the culvert opposite the Royal Hotel. —lt was resolved that fourteen days' extension be granted, and if the con"traotis not completed in that time the penalty be enforced, From the Secretary of the United Distriot. Charitable Aid Board, requesting the payment of the third instalment due,—The Town Clerk was authorised to make the paymeut. Charitable Aid Board. The Town Olork pointed out that it was desirable to take some steps before the House met to see that the question of separation was brought forward at the next session, Tiie Mayor; I understand a petition on the subject is now before the House. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to the member for the distriot on the subject. The Gorse Nuisance. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that proper steps were not being taken by private owiafers to olear gorse off the roads. He would urge thata by-law on thesubject be framed. The Mayor thought there was power under the Public Works Act to,compel owners to eradicate the pest.
Or Hessey thought the Aot should be stringently enforced. It was resolved that in one month from date the Town Clerk write to property owners, ordering thorn to eradicate the gorse. Gas Retorts, Cr Dixon: I should like to know if any information has been received with regard to thO gas retorts, The Clerk: I have uot yet received any advice. Cr Dixon: It is necessary that something be done in the matter of new retorts before the winter. The Clerk was instructed to write to the firms from which the retorts are being procured; urging that they be sent without delay. ■ ' Ordinary. The Clerk, in answer to Cr Gapper, stated ; that no reply had been received from Mr Carey with reference to the creek passing jhrough his property. ' : 1 ' On the motion of Cr Gapper the Works Committee was empowered to a gate as requested by the Fire Brigade in Albert street if they considered it necessary. The Ovorseer was: instructed to remove an obstruction in Bannister street in the shape of a flood-gate. The Council then went'.into Cominjttee to open tenders, v ,
