SENSATIONAL AFFAIR.
Dotorminei attempt at Robbory. A very sensational affair has beon reported to the (lolioe of Wellington, Shortly after 12 o'clock on Tuesday night, Mrs Lewis, licensee of the Cambridge hotel, Cambridgo terrace, beard a noise while in her bedroom, and on investigation foand a man, apparently fast asleep, lying under her baby's bed. She acquainted the barman, Mr J. Smith, with her discovery, and then ?he began re• •' moving the two children from the ;oom, meaning then to call in the police. The crying of one of the children apparently woke tho intruder, furon Smith roiurnmg to the he found'that the light had been pun out, and-.thafc tho man was behind a press in n dark oorner.Smith called upon him to self up, instead of which MareM at his would-be captor and inflicted ft deep gash on his forehead with a China candlestick, afterwards falling partly down the stairs.',' Mr M. Ziman, who boards at the hotel, was awakened by the noise, and he and Smith pursued the man, who, however, succeeded in escaping through the billiard room window',' Which had boen, it was found, previously broken, The midnight visitor was recognised by both Mrs Lewis fend the barman ns a man who went into the b« about a couple of hours before he was discovered concealed under the bed.
