RARATONGAN AFFAIRS.
Mr P. J. Moss and too- Tradors. '. Mr W. H. De Lisle, of the firm of Goodwin and De Lisle, South Sea Island traders, has arrived in Wellington for the purpose of presenting a petition to the Governor from the Baratonga Chamber.^,.Commerce ■ relative to certain grievances inconnection with- the • administration . of M>E. J. Moss, British .Resident atEa.ratonga. Mr.De Lisle, who,,'/ reached Auckland by' the Bichmoud"' last week, and came on to Wellington' " by the'Muhinapua, states that the relations between the'business people • aiid Mr Moss are .by no means cordial. ■ . Mr Moss, 'he' Bays,- has framed laws which are particularly burdensome to the traders, who have - appealed to him to bring about a more satisfactory state of affairs,* but. without succesi, Considerable correspondence fias passed; between Mr j Moss and th'e Chamber of'Cqrumeroe' |at Baratonga, and on the 15th Decembeta;cohfeteuoebetween him ' ; and that body .was held. In the cpurse.of fie discussion ,Mr ,J.,-M.,-j. Gelling, a member of the Baratonga' I Oounoil, eomplained' that Mr Moss had wholly ignored him in the framing of the laws, andMr Exam said that Mr.. Moss, in ignoring Mr .. Gelling, was insulting all the foreign residents. The conference; closed without any deoision being come lo."\ The Chamber subsequently decided to send Mr De' lisle to Wellington to interview the Governor and lay a petition, before him, ..praying that .; the residents should have some voice ' in the framing of their laws by representation in Parliament. ;v
