R, Smith, Dumdin The Company is promoted for the purpose of aaiuiring from the present owncis the newly erected Gasworks at Palmerstou North, and of carrying on the business of gas manufacturing in all its branches in the o;u ■ ;■/ modo of Gas Companies, and for other purposes stated in tho Memorandum of AsßOciatio.i, Tho works wore erected by Means John Co.ites and Cu, Has Engineers and contractors of large experience, under a contract with iho Palmerstou North Borough Council, and were purchased from them by the present owners, Messrs Coatcs and Co. retaining an interest. The leas? of tho sile of the works and the concussions embodied in the contract for erection (copies of which can bo seen at tho offices of Messrs Harcoui t and Co,, and also of tho various "'her brokers of the intended company throughout the Colony), aro now vested in equity in tho Promote, and tho legal intoiest will bo assigned to the Company by the New Zealand attorney of Messrs Coates and Co,, and the attention of applicants for shares is particularly directed to the provisions of these documents, which the Promoters themselves look upon as eminently favourable, It is almost unknown fora gas company to fail; on the other hand, all have paid good dividends when even only fairly managed.
Palmerston North is well known to be a most progressive town, and must eventually contain a largo popu'ittinn. It is tho centre ol an extensive area ol rich agricultural and pastoral country. In no part of the Colony is settlement more rapidly proceeding than in the surround* in» district, and the nctiit cumpletiou of tho Gorge Lino connecting the Wellington and Manawatu Railway and the Wangaiiui'flovr Plymouth Railway with the Napier Line, must make this town a large and busy railway and commercial centre, The recent census returns show that Palmeratou North ban mado the enormous increaso of (ib| por cent in its population since the census of 1886, Wellington showing an increase of 5076, the largest numerically in the Coluiiy, but giying a percentage of only 19J innroase an compared with 1886, As investments, Gas Companies have been iinmrgst tho BureaUnd most profitable in the colonies. In Australia and Tasmania tho avewgo dividend paid by Gas Companies, and the premiums upon the paid up value of the shares aro as follows:—Dividends, £l3 loi; Premiums on Shares exceed 77 por cent, The streets in the Borough of Palmerston North are now lighted with gas, as also aro all tho principal buildings and places of business, and the customers of tho Company are monthly increasing much beyond anything that \m anticipated. The returns furnished by the Alanager showthat for 1891 the receipts of the works ato over 227 per cent in excess of what they were for tho same period in 1889. From tho largo extensions of mains and other works during last year, it is not anticipated that any furthjr outlay will be necessary in the same direction for some time to come. • But extensions to the works, if necessary, would not in any case proportionately equal the cost of prownt installation, as much work has boen dono applicable to extended works, The Vendors offer their interest in the lease, plant, and all concessions for the sum of £15,000. In Now Zealand, as in Australia, Gas Companies have proved exceptionally sound investment, and no class of shares command generally such high premiums and pay such steady dividend! as thoy do. Gas Shares in New Zealand stand at an average premium on tho paid up capital of over 47? per cent, and have thus proved thomsolrcs as a class unsurpassed in popular favour with investors, The averago dividends paid by these Companies in 1890 equalled £lolssod per cent, and it must not be ovor-luokod that owing to the strike and the consequent hiijh price ot coals, &c., this year was an exceptionally trying one for all Gas Companies. In addition to paying these large dividends, bonuses have been paid, and extensive reserve funds formed.
Tliere la oyery reason to anticipate a similar succebs for the Palmeraton North Gasworks, which are now in first class working oraor, and most satisfactory results. Special attention of intending investors is jailed to the fact that all expenses of brokcngo, advertising and other expenses of floating the Company will be borne by tho vendors; the Company will not therefore be saddled with any preliminary expenses. Applications for shares must bo made to the Brokers, or to tho Colonial Bank of New Zealand and its agents throughout New Zealaud. Tho share list will closo on the 31st January, 1t92. , HAKCOUBT&CO., Brokers, Wellington. free TO ALL! tea samples.
