Friday, January Ist, 1892, Notwithstanding tlio fact that the rain fell in torrent* st Featherston yesterday morning, and tlißt there, wns every appearing of its continuing, a targe number of peoplo were present at the first day's racing in connection .with the Wairarapa Racing Club's Summer Meeting. Fonminlely tlio weather cleared up about uvon, and none regretted being present as some excellent sport was witnu.-i'sod, close and . exciting finishes and small dividends being tlio order of the day, The largest amount paid out was on Dromedary, in the Hack Handicap, but as a protest mis entered agains l , Dromedary fur crossing'by the owner of the second horso Donovan—the lucky speculators had somo anxious moments while waiting for thedecision of the Stewards, Dromeduiy's win was upheld, and he paid the comfortable dividend of £lO 13s. The Wairarapa Cup was canied off by Comet, the favorite, although Mahara looked a likely winner and came very near it. ! Mr G.Freeth scored another success with .Rebellion's brother devolution, and succeeded in pulling off the Flying and Welter Handicaps, Every praise is due to the Secretary (Mr W. Bock) and the Stewards for tlio splendid way in which everything for Ilia cuufort and convenience of visitors was looked after, and their energotio efforts helped a great deal towards making the meeting the success it was. Two totalisatois were on the ground, both being worked as one, and considerably over £BOOO was put through during the day. The starting in most ef tha events was excellent, and with tlio exception of tlio Flying Handicap no fault could be tound with ihe manner in which Mr Pilmer carried out his difficult duties. In the event mentioned, however, by some mistake, Revolution got a considerable start of ( the other horses, and some of the 1 backers of other bloods naturally I murmured. The chief ovent of tlio ' day was, perhaps, the excellent 1 luncheon provided by Mr A. L, j Whyte, o( Carterton, who appeared to bo patronised as he deserved.
