PAHIATUA NOTES.

3d (From Our Ovm Corresponde/it.) j! I wired you a few days since of t a case of poisoning which occurred a ,ji Mr E. Naylor's house, • where bot 1 ,jl Christmas Day and tlie marriage o s> his eldest daughter were being cele jg brated. No distinct clue to the causi Id has yet been found, though it is con sr jectured that the acid U3ed in tin ,3 manufacture of the food eaten tha day acted upon some deleterious substance and produced a virulent poison ia The sufferers have been in a verj ? painfui way since, ind I learn to \. day that much concern is felt foi il some of them, including Mr Dickson of your town'. B6th of p doctors have been unremitting in X their attention to the patients. ,t Many of the settlers have startec in their bush fires, and the whole , e country is literally full of smoke The dry logs about the town hav« n caught and been burning for a tew sr days now. Some anxiety has been a felt from this latter reason, as'manj r, have good cause to remember the vast ,j injury to property in similar town- ,, ships from this yory cause, lieallj i, the Town Board authorities should i insist upon all logs'and rubbish'being g cleared' within the tpwji district,'as ,f with the higi) gales we Ijaye bejen ex ? t perlencing lately, the danger is very a great. b Mr ? r <W erect j, n ij r i yards upon his Wellington 9 tion section shortly. The plans are 3 now QUfe. The " Heathen Chinee »* has ox--1 tended his business operations to our township; one of the almond-eyed , having started in the inevitable fancy goods and fruit line. Later. I Since sending off my previous notes Mr Peter DicksonVpf Mast«rtdn. bas ■succumbed. Dr Hosking had been telegraphed for, but arrived only ilirco

minutes before the patient expired in great agony. Mr Joseph Moore, a tanner on the Makakahi, died at 12 o'clock, and but little hopes Are enter tained for his widow. There are nineteen cases left, including the whole of the Naylor and Sndcole families except the bride {nee. Miss Naylor). Mr Robert Sedcole jurir. is lying in a precarious state at his brother's residence, and Mr Pierce Lundon is extremely ill at Mr S. Naylor's house. I understand, and am pleased to say, that the indisposition of Mr and Mrs E. Naylor senr. is now due more to the effect of grief for the unfortunate victims* than to the poison. There has still been no discovery made as to the actual cause of the poisoning, but Dr Hosking, who returned to Masterton last night, is making an exhaustive analysts, and will report upon it. Shocking as it seems, the doctor holds out little hopes for the recovery of the remaining sufferers from the poison. Mrs Dickson has improved slightly this (Wednesday) morning. It now trans-. pires that the actual poisoning must have occurred upon Boxing Day, as there are several who ate their Xmos dinner at Mr Naylor's (but who were i absent at the family gathering on the following dty) who are unaffected.
