PAHIATUA NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) MrT, L. Buick, M.H.R., lectured here last evening on the objects and aims of the National Liberal Federation, of which- he is the organising Secretary. The Public Hall was fairly well filled, a sprinkling of ladies being present* The chair wasoccupied by Mr J. Dawson, who briefly introduced the speaker. The lecturer made no bones of the fact that his object in addressing them was to secure their practical sympathy to the cause of Liberalism by subscriptions to the "fighting fund," which it seems is established to pay the electioneering expenses of those unable to pay their own. Happy Liberal candidates! A great and pressing anxiety will be lifted from your shoulders when fighting elections. During the address the irrepressible Mr Gordon Grosbie mounted the platform and handed the Chairman a handsome bouquet for presentation to Mr Buick. At the conclusion a vote of thanks was accorded the speaker on th 9 motion of Mr A. Reese.
Messrs Sullivan and Corboy are having extensive alterations made to the Pahiatua Commercial and Family Hotel, as they find the present accommodation quite insufficient at this popular hostelry. Several bedrooms are being added and the bar is to be shifted to give greater privacy to one end of the house.
Business generally just at present is rather dull, but it is hoped that things will look up before Christmas. The number of men leaving here for the South Island to spend Xmos, afcer having knocked up fairly large cheques, is very noticeable, and (from the local tradesmen's point of view) much to be regretted.
