SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held last evening, there being present Messrs W. M. Eas hope (in the chair) Z. M. Hoar, J. Williams, W. Perry C E. Daniell and W. G. Beard.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported a credit balance at date of £1 8s lOd. A letter was read from the Education Board, authorising the Committee to let the section in Victoria street, set aside for an infant schaol, at a weekly tenancy.—lt was resolved to let the section to Mr Bartlett at the rate of 6s per month. The Secretary of the Board also wrote, stating that the queetiou of reducing the costs of school books would be considered fully at the next meeting, and that the sum of .£BSO had been placed on the estimates for the erection of an infant school.

The headmaster (Mr Jackson) reported the number of names on the roll to be 577, the average attendance 412, and the percentage of attendances 71. The attendance during the past month hud been very poor. The out let pipe of the cesspit was still under water and several smnll repairs to the school buildings required undertaking during the vacation. Miss Keeling reported the highest attendance at the Infant School during the month to be 78, the lowest 57, and the average attendance 66. The effecting of repairs to the main school, as suggested by the head master, was left with the visitiug member, Mr Daniell.

The headmaster reported that the tellurian presented by Dr Hosking had been received.—On the motion ot Mr Beard a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Dr Hosking for his valuable present. Tho Secretary staled that notices had been served on several parents on account of children absenting themselves.

Mr Daniell was appointed visiting member for the month and the meeting adjourned.
