SUICIDE IN WELLINGTON.

A Domestic. Servant Bangs Herself. A domestic servant named Sarah Ramsay, about 27 years of age, committed suicide yesterday by hanging berself at the residence of Mrs Edwards, proprietress of a private school in Murphy-street, Wellington, by whom she was employed. Mrs Edwards and her family, together with the children oi Mr Basil E. S. Stocker, employed in the Parliamentary Library, who is residing with her, left home in the morning to attend a picnic at Petone, and did not return until late in the evening. Mr Stocker was also away during the day, and when he returned at about ten minutes past five he was horrified to find deceased hanging from the top rail of the staircase. She was quite cold and stiff, and had apparently been dead for some hours. Mr Stocker at once cut the body down, and placed it on a couch, and then sent for the police, by whom the corpse was subsequently removed to the Morgue. The unfortunate woman, who was unmarried, came from Geraldine, in Canterbury, about nine months ago, and shortly after her arrival was confined of a child. She subsequently made au effort to prosecute the alleged father of the child, but was unable to discover his exact whereabouts, he having gone to Australia. By the advice of Detective Campbell, whom she had consulted, she applied to the Benevolent Society to take care of the child. The Society arranged to have the child taken care of, and the deceased then took a situation at Greytown. She returned a short time ago, and was employed by Mrs J. Ballance. JStmut a fortnight ago she antered the ser vice of Mrs Edwards. She was a very steady woman, and Mrs Ed wards gives her an excellent charae ter as a servant. Yesterday, before doing away with herself, she cleaned the house and everything was in perfect order when Mrs Edwards returned. She had also packed her boxes with great care. No reason at present can be assigned for the committal of the act, but it is supposed mat she was slightly deranged, and this may probably prove to be the cause of her self destruction. An inquest will be held at the Morgue at 4.30 this afternoon.— Tinea.
