ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Alfredton Road Board was held on December Ist. Present —Messrs Kebbell, S. M. George, Benton, and Eli Smith. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From certain settlers re estimate for metalling and formation on Fori road, requesting the Board to get a survey made.—lt was resolved that the estimates be forwarded to Mr Herbert Saunders, and request him to call a meeting of the settlers interested and | lay the matter before them, and when this is done, either to get them to put their decision in writing or send a deputation to wait on the Board and explain their views. From Mr Cross claiming fencing on one side of the Ihuraua Valley Road, and £ 8 per acre. —Consideration of the matter was held over until next meeting. From Uommissioner of Crown Lands ro proposed expenditure on Central Mangaone road. From Survey Office, enclosing schedule of thirds and list of land sold, shewing prices paid. From same, re Barton's line, stating that the road was legal to a certain point, and enclosing map shewing same.

From the Clerk to the Eketahuna Road Board, stating that Board would find money for Tawataia Road (North end), and that the Central road loan was not carried. Mr Eli Smith stated that theTawataia settlers would not raige the £6OO in accordance with notice of motion given, and would now only raise £3OO, seeing that the Eketahuna loan was not carried. It was resolved that the Clerk take the necessary steps to raise £3OO under the Loans to Local Bodies Act, for formation and bridging on the Tawataia road North end, and that the Clerk be appointed Presiding Officer for the meeting and also take the poll if necessary. From C. A. Pownall, re claim made by George Benton for extras. It was resolved that Mr Pownall be informed that the Board hold a receipt for the contract and extras and decline to acknowledge or entertain any liability. Mr Eli Smith mentioned that the Board had bad a letter from the County Engineet some time ago re restricting traffic on the Main road during the coming Winter aud that the time was advancing and it would be well to let settlers consider the maiter in good time.—lt was decided that a meeting of settlers be called on Dec 15th at 11 a.m, (the meeting to be held in tbe Road Board Office) to consider the question of restricting the traffic on the road during the coming Winter.

Messrs Benton and Eli Smith were appointed to sign cheques.

Mauriceville Road Board.

A special meeting of the Mauriceville Boad Board was held on Thursday, December 10th, 1891. Present— Messrs G. Gunderson (chairman), W. Jessen, H. Jackson, C. Forsberg, and J. Bannister.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read, but previous Jo confirming several members expressed dissatisfaction with tbe action of the Board, at the meeting held on November 28th, in cancelling Mr Kelliher's contract so hastily, there being barely a qnorum present at the meeting. A lengthy and somewhat heated discussion ensued, in which Mr Kelliher, who was present, joined. Tbe general desire appeared to be : while conserving the interests of the ratepayers, not to treat the contractor unfairly. The final discussion arrived at was to confirm the minutes, and that instead of completing Mr Kelliher's contract on the West Maurice"ille Road by day labour tenders be called for finishing the work.

The ordinary meeting was then held, the same member s being present. A letter was received from Mr Martin Kennedy, requesting the Board to get the bridge on Dryer's flock I Road Extension and Wangaehu Road erected, so that this road may be fit for cart traffic in February.—lt was decided to call for tenders for the construction of these bridges, the erection of which have been delayed till the formation was sufficiently advanced to allow of materials being got in, It was also resolved to call tenders for metalling Maoriceville West Road in two con» tracts; and also for similar works on Jackson's Road, a man to be employed by the Board to spread the metal and exercise a general supervision over the work. The Chairman stated that he had inspected that part of the Central Mangamahoe Road to which Mr Gprdon-Cumminghad called the attention of the Board. He found this place in a very bad state anil suggested that about 0 chains be formed and a culvert be put in, which could Deconstructed out of some of the old culverts lying on tbe side of the road. After some discHssion, tbe phairman was authorised to get this piece of formatibp done, aud also tc.

Mr Jessen then repeated his motion " That the Board request the Returning Officer to resign," which met with uo support froai any member of the Board, hut himself. A progress payment of £5 was voted to MrE. Smith. The next ordinary meeting of the Board will be held on Saturday the 80th of January 1892.
