At the Tory Union Conference a motion was carried urging the Government to promote a mutual and favourable Customs tariff between the colonies and Great Britain.
The crews of the Brighton and Shoreham lifeboats hare been officially censured for apathy displayed at the wreck ot the ship Benvenue. The Rev. George Barrett has been chosen Secretary of the Congregational Union, in the place of the Rev. Dr. Hannay, who died last year. November 26.
Mr Chamberlain, speaking at the Birmingham Conference, said he neither expected nor desi-ed re-union with the Liberals till Home Rule was abandoned.
The Bank of England invite holders of New Zealand debentures bearing a high rate oi interest to convert them into 3i per cent inscribed stock. The Earl of Aberdeen has purchased 13,000 acres of land at Vernon, in Canada, for the purpose of fruit culture. The price paid was £50,000. In his speech at Birmingham, Lord Salisbury said that foreign tariffs were lessening the amount of labour available in the country, and driving the labourers into the towns. The Government were desirous of remedying this state of things, but they shunned dangerous wanderings in the regions of economic error. Mr Chamberlain said he would fight shoulder to shoulder with the Governmeut on the Irish policy to the bitter end with a view of defeating the vilest political conspiracy ot the age. He expressed the opinion that Mr Gladstone's return to political power would imperil the peace of Europe. At the conclusion of his speech Mr Chamberlain was wildly cheered.
The Chronicle, commenting on the speech, says :—" Mr Chamberlain has effaced himself as a political force." The Morning Post states that the workmen's delegates present at the conference favoured protection. St Petersburg, November 26.
The Czar gives seven and a half million roubles out of revenue from his private estates to the famine fund.
A general lock out of bootmakers is threatened in consequence o f the men availing the awards made by the arbitrator in the recent disputes, Mr J. H. Wilson, Secretary of the Seamen's Union,in his evidence before the L hour Commission said that seamen to the number of 50,000 went out during the late strike, with the result that they received £3,000,000 in increased wages. News has beei) received that a large force ot Mongolian rebels is advancing on Pekin. Imperial troops have been dispatched to wet them, Many converts were massacred at Kungchow.

Relations between the Brazilian army and navy are somewhat strained, and considerable uneasiness is felt in consequence. General Peixton has issued a manifesto declaring all General Fonseca's acts null and void.
