The five roomed house of Mr Simonix situated at the Upper Plain, was destroyed by fire shortly after nine o'clock last evening. How the fire originated is a mystery. Mr Simonix was sleeping on his verandah when the fire broke out, and when discovered the flames had a good hold of the house. The only furniture saved were a few ohaira. The house was insured for £IOO, the furniture for £SO, and the dairy for £l2 10s in the North British Insurance Co. Mr Simonix estimates his loss above insurance at £IOO.

An amusing incident occurred at Greytown last night, when a band of tin kettlers visited the residence of a newly married couple, ar.d politely asked the bridegroom to bring out the bottle. A woll attended congregational meeting was held at the Pre?byterinn Church, Carterton, last night, to hear the Treasurer's report in respect to the financial position of the Churches in this district. Tho Gladstone Church was reported to have a credtt-balanco of £2jS 6s Qd ; the Carterton Church a debit-ballance of a trifle below £SO on the building * and the Gaeytown Church a' debjfc of £370 on their building. The report was received as highly satisfactory, considering the shorf time that the Presbyterians have had a real standing in that district. The Minister also gave a very satisfactory account of the work in connection with the Churches as to membership and regular attendance and alao to the progress made in the Sunday schools.
