The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1891.
c i 0 Several well meant efforts have betu '• made to injure Mr Feist in his present J| candidature for the Mayoralty of 1 Masieiton. Hia long career both as y a private settler and as a public man •- has been so blameless that his opponents can frame no serious in- [• dictment agairst him. Apparently the gravest thing that can be urged " is that a skew culvert, a well known j. class of drain, has been laid opposite it his property. This has been termed e a squinting culvert, and it is almost '" uuggested that it indicates some '? obliquity on his part. If skewness is || to be imparted into the election it is n probable that his opponent, Mr Powe nail, will come off second best. There d are some who hold that there was e some obliquity in the manner in which that person came forward and retired on the occasion of the licensing election, there are others who fancy " there was a little skewness in the Picturesque Atlas cases, while more recently he has been suspected of a j slight twist in connection with the Rifle Club movement, to say nothing " of a bevel which was perceptible when * he placed certaiu outbuildings on the burgess roll as a phenomenal qualify cation for voting. Then again it has - been declared tbafc Mr Feist as contrasted with Mr Pownall is goody, and this comparison we are quite prepared to acccpo. If the burgesses have to choose between a "goody" and y a "bady" candidate they will doubtless favour the former. What the town c leally needs is a good man of business at the head of the Council, a man who will command respect. We do not underate the ability Mr Pownall has d ; s|»laye.d during the - term of his office as mayor or the fact that he has madj t a fairly good chairman, but he is not in our opinion up to the mark as head of this municipality. When he was fiist elected he did not disguise his ambition to make the Mayoralty a step towards the House, andpos-i s.bly when his friend, Mr Hogg, gets' t called to ths Upper House, he will he prepared to take his place. But we i do not care for the political party with which he is associated, or for the au- " dacity wi'h which he deems himself fit for the highest positions in the community. There are abler, though perhaps more modest men in the { district than himself, and Ave fail to j see why he should displace them. . Audacity i.s very often a trump card at election times, but we trust on this occasion the burgesses will care- ! fully weigh the qualifications of both candidates and give their votes to the one who is more wortty of their confidence.
