Remarkable Voyages.
There were recently in Liverpool two sailing vessels which have recently completed very remarkable voyages. Not only did they leave the Mersey on the same day last year and arrive at the same destination within twelve hours of each other, but they returned to Liverpool, reaching port the same day, having in the meantime covered a distance of not less than 80,000 miles. The vessels are the Lorton and Cockermouth. Both left the Mersey on October sth last year for Astoria, Oregon, arriving at that port, one on March Ist, and the other on the 2nd. They had, however, been in company with each other for a good portion of the voyage—in fact, at one period of the journey they were in sight for forty days, and during that time the crews kept up an interchange of courtesies, crossing over from one ship to the other until an unfriendly breeze parted them. Both Captains had their wives on board, and during the forty days one of the captains and his wife took advantage of the opportunity and dined on a Sunday on board the other's vessel, the visit being returned on the following Sunday by the other commander and his lady. Both vessels left Astoria on April Bth, but this time their destinations were different, the Lorton being bound for Dunkerque and the Cockermouth for Havre. They again arrived at their destinations about the same time, however, the Cockermouth at Havre on August 19th, and the Lorton on the 22nd at Dunkerque. They both left the French ports on September 9th for Liverpool, and passed Holyhead at the same time, entering the Mersey almost side by side. The vessels were 842 days out.
