Auckland, November 17. The New Zealand Herald aays that the announcement of Lord resignation* will be received with general regret, and further says : " Since, his arrival in the Colony he has won golden opinions among all classes. lie interrupted a promising political career at Home in order to study the colonial question on the, spot, and lie will return to England with a better knowledge of New Zealand than alraoßt any of his.r predecossors, for he has travelled from one ead of the country to the other, and made himself personally familiar with all that is worth seeing or know* ing in tho Colony." To-day Mr J. H. Upton, Mayor of Auckland, sent the following telegram to Lord Onslow at Christchurch : " The citizens of Auckland hear, with much regret of You* Exoellenoy'i retirement. They will always associate Your Excellency's Governorship with a bigh interest in, and desire for, the highest wslfare of the Colony." In reply to his telegram conveying the regret of the citizens of Auckland at the resignation of the Earl Jt Onslow, the Mayor has received the following telegram froji His Excellency :—" The Worshipful the Mayor, Auckland.—Deeply gratified by the kind expressions your telegram.
