NORTH COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Wni» rarapa North County Council was held yesterday (Thursday), there being present Crs Von Keden (in the chair), C. E. Cockburn-Hoorl, Eli Smith, J. Groves.junr., and K. S. Mannsell. | The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

CORRESPONDENCE. Prom P. Oarr, drawing attention to what he considered to be an injustice with regard to contract No. 29, Eke-tahuna-Tinui road, and requesting that his deposit money be returned.—The Chairman explained that an extension of time had been granted to Mr Carr in winch to commence his contract, but as the work was not begun the contract * as forfeited.—Cr CockburnHood proposed that the forfeiting of the contract be confirmed, —Cr Smith seconded.—Carried.

From Commissioner of Crown Lands, asking whether the County could pro* cure another gravel reserve at Manricevillp, so that the Mauriceville School Committee could be provided with a building site.—Received.

From the Clerk to the Wairarapa North Rabbit Board, requesting permission to use the Council Chambers for meeting purposes.—Reques* granted.

From John McDermotfc, Taueru, calling attentiou to the nuisance caused by cattle straying on the Tinui road. —Cr Smith thought the ranger should be compelled to do his duty, as this nuisance was becoming .common throughout th» Councy,—On the mo-

tion ot Cr Smith it was decided that Mr Taplin's services as ranger be dispensed with, and applications be called for the position. From the Castlepoint Road Board, stating that the sum of £2OO had been granted by the Board to the County Tor the maintenance of the roads in the district. —Received with thanks. From Mr Hitchiiips with reference | to the gate on the Mttngapeu road.— I On the motion of Cr Cockburn-Hood, | permission was granted to Mr Hitch-

inga to maintain the gate in question. From H. Nitz, requesting that a track be made through the Maori reserve to hi 3 property at Kaiwhata, out of bis thirds.—Referred to the Engineer for a report. From F. E. Tatham, East Coast, stating that his neighbours appeared to be favourable to constructing the bridge required, and requesting that the thirds accruing from his property be spent on the road in his district. —On the motion of Cr Smith it was decided to apply to the Land Board for permission to expend the thirds as requested, From S. Dawson, Newman, asking permission to fence the land in front of his property which is on the Woodville Road, Wellington Special Set-

tleraent. —On the motion of the Chairman it was decided that permission be granted to fence the read reserve.

DEPUTATION. MrU. Battes waited upon the Council and complained of the enormous charges made at the Akiteo ferry. The ferry was extremely inconvenient and under these oircumstances he thought the charges too high. The ferrymanhimself was a great nitisancp. They had to pay lid per head for shepp after taking themovei* the river notwithstanding that they did not use the boat. A person taking a flock of sheep over the ferry had to walk about all night and shepherd his sheep. Then a; few miles away there was a ferry at Aohonga at which they had to pay aid per head. Cr Groves moved that the matter be held over till next meeting to allow of the presence of Cr flandyside.

Cr Cockburn-Hood seconded

Mr Battes urged that no time be lost in dealing with the matter, as it was a great hardship. The Chairman pointed out that they had to maintain their ferryman, and it was therefore necessary to make a charge. Mr Battes: But what I object to is paying for stock. Cr Cockbum-Hood: The watertables are blocked up by the sheep, and the roads have to be kept in ropair. Mr Battes. lam quite prepared to pay a reasonable sum, but I think I+tl is too much.

It was eventually decided that Cr Handyside be written to for an explanation of the matter before next meeting.

FINANCE. The reporc of the meeting of the Finance Committee was read and adopted, and accounts amounting to £458 19s 8d pass«d for payment.

engineer's report. The report of the Engineer was read and adopted.

GENERAL. It was resolved (hat Mr Murrell be requested to resign the position as ranger at Eketahuna it he cannot attend to his duties.
