The Wairarapa Daily MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1891.
The periodical readjustment of representation in this colon)- would seem to be a hopeless raddle. Once more all the constituencies of sew Zealand have been more or less clipped, aU tered and disfigured, and many merr? bers now represent electors who never returned them to Parliament. On the other hand the men who did elect them have, in many instances, been out away from them and presented to some other fellow, Possibly a batch of Liberals are handed over to a Conservative member, or a company of Conservatives presented to some red-hot Socialist M.H.K. Of course she Act uuder which these complications arise is a highly scientific selfadjusting measure, deficiency in it and in the men who made it is " common sense."
•' Civis" in the Olago Witness discourses upon a new parrot cry which comes from New South Wales, One-maa-one-vote is getting foetsore over Sydney way and as a fresh tipple one-man-one-billet is the favourite cry. The people who are returned to Parliament are to be paid their salaries, but are not allowed to earn money other ways. The lawyer who becomes a Parliamentarian is to give up his six and eightpence, the doctor who enters the Assembly surrenders his privilege flf egt-m'ng fees, and the journalist who takes to politics has to give up his editorial duties. Nothing is too absurd for the labour party to attempt, and the unipuists of New South Wales vie with their brethren in Queensland or ISew Zealand in the uitpoduptzon of some new antic or in popularising some new catch word.
The Justices of fcha Peace in the Wairarapa could do excellent eervjee if they held a meeting to protest against the extraoidinary changes which hava recently been made in the administration of the local courts of the district, the disrating of old court officers and the conversion of constables into clerks. We fear, however, that the J ustiees themselves have got too mixed to act in any collective capacity. Formerly to be on the roll was an honour, now to be off the roll is a distinction ! Some very queer leaven was introduced into our local oatch when the Stout-Vogel Ministry wjarg in power. Justices: were then made .who wdjWfi hesitate to supply their friends in advance with a stock of their autographs, with the official J.P. affix, for use when occasion required. Then again the roll has been further flavoured with the more recent Hogg blend, and some vary funny anecdotes are told of the escapades of some of the latest admixture. We fear on the whole the staff of Justices in the Wairarapa has become so deteriorated that it is hopeless to expect auy assistance from it, in the direction of securing a decent and trustworthy administration .of justice.
