A fire has broken out in the newly felled bush on the sections belonging to Mr T. Parsons and Mr Peter Thompson at Eketahuna. There i» said to be several petitions going the round praying the Minister for Public Works not to deviate the railway line between Woodville and Eketahuna. The great claim is that the land was bought with the line surveyed and the railway stations showing on the maps. The Dunedin Official Assignee has invented a new method of collecting debts. He advertises that he will sell by auction on a certain date book debts in
a money lending estate, and that those who wish to avoid the publicity of having their names annouu&d by the auctioneer should settle at once. The case Bowerman Bros v. Riddle, which came on for hearing yesterday morning,was adjourned until the 21th of November on the application of plaintiffs, costs being given against them. The reason for adjournment was that Mr RidSe refused to |write his signature at the request of plaintiffs' solicitor, and His Worship did not consider he could be compelled to do so.

Constable O'Leary, of the Masterton police fo:ce, had rather an unpleasant experience yesterday. He was proceeding to the show grounds, when he observed a heifer which had liberated from the yardt making straight for a female who was attired in a dress of rather a striking colour—a colour for which cows have somewhat- of an antipathy. The constable took in the situation at a glance, and rushed to the rescue. Throwing up his hands he endeavoured to Btop the beast in its wild career. But alas ! the heifer was not to be frightened by either handcuffs or baton, and the heroic " bobby, " in the twinkling of an eye, was placed hors dc combat. Fortunately, although considerably shaken he was not seriously injured. Tin-, owner of the heifer is wanted.
