The Finance and Works Committees of the Masterton Borough Coun cil met last evening. Presenters Heron (Chairman), E. Chimberlauypd Mutrie. The Overseer reported on works done during the month. 1. That the pump had been removed from ibe brewery yard and the timber used for a flume at the fishery to fill the water cart in Chapel St by gravitation. It works well, filling the cart in about three minutes. 2. The water tables in Queen St have, been cleaned from the school to the Waipoua, but the tarring has been left until the warm weather, as the tar works much bet" ter then- 3. The water tables have beeu cleaned in Bannister. Russ, Chapel, Dixon, Renall, Hall and Villa streets, and Lincoln road. 4. The ruts haye been raked in on Railway road and Renall street. No new works were recommended, as notice bad been given him to clear roads of gorse, broom, etc., and this would be a work to last some time if all the roads in the Borough had to be cleared. The report was received, and the overseer instructed to clear the gorse, etc., from such of the roads only where it was not probable that the growth had spread from adjoining private lands. Cr Heron moved, " That a progress payment of £lO be made to S. Bartlett on his completing 18 cylinders of the culvert at Royal Hotel. —Carried. A number of accounts were examined and recommended for payment.
Mr Hathaway laid a list of outstanding rates before the Committee, explaining what steps had been taken and what sums paid, and was instructed as to further proceedings. A letter was read from the Rev. 3. Patterson, re being sued for rates, and firem T. Adams, sending part payment. This concluded the business.
