CRICKET.
Masterton 7- Carterton.
The cricket season was opened in Mastertou on Saturday last, when a match was played on the Pitk thai between teams representing the Masterton and Carterton Clubs. Considering the early stage of the season a very good display of the game was made. Indeed, the spectators, who numbered several hundreds, expressed surprise at the exc llent form shown by the players on both sides. The match was a one innings one, and resulted in a win for the home team. The ground was rather lumpy, which naturally affected the trundling. Otherwise the game was played under the most favourable circumstauces. In their firs* innings Masterton put together 92 runs and their opponents -16, or just half that number. The visitors were given a second innings (which was of course outside the match) when they knocked up 50 runs. The bwoling of Malcolm and Perry tor Masterton and Darroch for Carterton was the most effective. The following are the respective scores:—
