Matrimonial Mattira. <a Christchurch, Saturday. The Diocesan Synod has closed. It was decided to petition Parliamont that notioe be given to the registrar of marriages that before a certificate will be issued the period for which
applicants must have resided in the district be raised from 8 to 14 days; that the fee for a certificate be reduced considerably lower than £1 ; that information accessible to the public be supplied as to what are " Impediments " of kindred or alliance to proposed marriage as to the absence of which every applicant for cate is bound to make a solemn declaration.
Found la a Sltca Gisdourne, Saturday. John Corniei an old man, a black' smith, was picked up dead in a ditch at Matawhero this morning. He waa walking home from a show last evening very diunk. It i« supposed he lay down or fell into the ditch and there died. An inquest will be held this afternoon. The Otaw Xtagfey tTnlon. Dunedin, Saturday. The Marlborough Express having enquired as to what Rugby Union had for forward play of the Otago team in the Canterbury match, the Union have replied that they are the guar* dians of football in the Otago district. Failing a satisfactory explanation and apology for the statements made, the members of the forward division will endeavour to obtain redress by legal process, the Otago Union paying the expenses ot tho suit
