The Melanesian mission steamer Southern Gross, which sailed some days ago for Australian waters, enenpouritered the full force of the recent gales in fie Channel, and was forced to take shelter at Cowes, in the Isle of Wight. Jt was then found that she bad heen strained by the heavy weather, necessitating her being dismantled. She is expected to be detained about three weeks, undergoing repairs. Rear-Admiral Lord rjlm-les Scott will bs promoted to the post of ViceAdmiral in August when he will be succeeded on the Australian station by Rear-Admiral H. F. btephenson. During the self denial week held in connection with the Salvation Army, £40,000 was raised in aid of the funds.
The New Shipping Company's new steamer Quahine has bepn successfully launched at Dumbarton. Sir John Lubbock, Chairman, and Aidfsrman Sir Thomas Farrer, ViceChairman of the London County Council, have withdrawn their resignations at the unanimous wish of the Council. The priests have selected Michael Davitt as their candidate for North Kilkenny. Mr John Redmond has applied for the Chiltern Hundreds, and will contest the Cork vacancy.
