The inquest on the body of William Bishop, labourer, of Metbven, concluded to-day, and a verdict of accidental death was arrived at. The deceased was returning to his camp from town on the night of 2nd -October, and fell six feet into a dry creek, where he was found at midday. He was moved to a shad yplace till night, when he was taken to the Ashburton hospital, where 1 he died on October 13th. Tbemedicsl ooidence showed that the cause of tieath was of the brain. Deceased _tod no relations in the Colony. *£r~ Gbevuouth, October 17. Mr John W. Hall, who has been Town Cerk for 25 years past, and one of the oldest residents in the district, died somewhat suddenly this morning, although he had been ailing for some time past. Gisborne, October 17. Two children named Heney wero poisoned through eating the leaves of a native plant known as rangiora or paku paki. Ihe youngest, a boy of four, has recovered, but the other, a girl of sever, is in a very critical condition.

The fourteenth annual report of Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company.now published, is highly utisfao tory. The losess incurred through the closing of the Sydney warehouse have been fully met by current profits. The profit and loss acconnt showed £11,286 to credit. £2872 went towards depreciation, £3500 was passed as interim dividend last March, and the Directors recommend a further divident of 8 J per cent to September 30th, making a total of 8 per cent for the year. The total assets oftbe Company are estimated at £129,Z il, and the paid-up capital is £IOO,OOO. Gaujrat Smuggling, Chbistohuboh, October 17. Wm. Banders, late second officer ot the a.s. Tainui, pleaded guilty at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning to smuggling 41 boxes of cigan while on board the steamer at Lyttelton on the sth October. He wae fined £SO, with costs. The money was paid. Suicide at OamaruOamaru, October 18. A young man named James Baron, of Mahens, shot himself on Saturday afternoon,, His actions lately, had been strange, but he managed to ebcape observation, and got into a room and shot himself dead.
