TREHAIR-OSBORNE CONCERT CO.
Seldom, if ever before in Masterton, has such a thoroughly sterling entertainment as that given last night in the Theatre Eoyal been so poorly patronised, and why people who will flock in considerable numbers to second and even third rate nigger minstrel entertainments should have missed the opportunity of hearing vocalists of undoubted ability, nud talent far above the average, is quite beyond compreh9nsion. As the night was very tine, and there was no counter attraction, the paucity of attendance is still mere remarkable. The people of Masterton are, generally speaking, lovers of a good concert and keen judges of merit in this direction, and we feelsure that to-night will make amends to Miss Trehair Osborne and her talented company for the disheartening reception they met with last evening. Notwithstanding the few present, the programme being faithfully carried out, every item was breathlessly received by the audience, and everyone expressing regret thattke reception given to the visitors was so poor. The concert opened with the overture " Minnehaha" by Miss Gardner, the same lady playing all the accompaniments in a manner which proved her to be an accomplished pianist. The quartette " Where are you going my pretty maid ? " given in perfect unison, showed the high musU cal training of the company, whilo the higher reputation of Miss Trekair-Os-borne as a vocalist wasfully sustained in her beautiful rendition of the songs I " Old Dublin Bay " and " The Better Land." The Misses Johnson and Parsons, both possessing rich and won derfullv well-trained voices, sang very sweetly, and appeared to great advantage in the "Venetian Boat Song " duett. Mr J. W. Kilner, whose splendid bass voice has made his name kno «n throughout the province, quite delighted bis hearers with the manner in which be handled the difficult bass solos " A Hi'ndreJ Fathoms Deep," and " Will o' the Wisp." Mr J. M. Nairn, the tenor of the company, also sang with feeling and expression, acquitting himself in a highly creditable manner. Another conceri is to be given to-night, and it is to be hoped that the opportunity of attending a really high class entertainment will not be thrown away by the people of Masterton and the surrounding district.
