The Police Court examination of Thomas and his wife at Hakatu, for alleged illtraatment of their ohild, is olosed. Thomas has been committed for trial, and will be charged with manslaughter. His wife was aoquitted. The Son. J. KoXe&tfe.

The steamer Kahu to-day brought news from the Chathams that Mr Hunt, of Pitt's Island, one of the oldest settlers in the group, had died of dropsy. Ministerial Movements. Dunedin, October 15. Is is probable that the Minister of Lands will address his constituents some day next week, and the Premier will also probably address a meeting here. The Hon G. F. Richardson intends addressing his constituents afterwards and replying to the M inister of Lands. The Hons J. Mackenzie and Ward were in town to day, and received some private deputations, none,of a public nature. The Duneiln Unemployed Dunedin, October 15. Arrangements have been made to select 176 of the unemployed oil Monday for work on the Otago Cen« tral, preference being given to married men with families. Another gang of 25 men from the country will be sent to work atthe same t^iic. The Piotureuue Atlas. Inveroargill, October 15. In the other Pictoreßque Atlas case to-day defendant asserted that he only signed a list of patrons ; that the signature on the order was not his. He pointed out several differ* ences between the way in which the name and address were written and his invariable practice. Plaintiffs were granted.an adjournment on the payment of costs, and will produce Metoalf, the canvasser. It transpired that the 86 numbers of the work left on defendant's verandah were fished out of a stream in the vioinity by some children. Roftd Oommunlofctlen. New Plymouth, October 15. A large meeting convened by the Mayor was held last evening with, respect to connecting Auckland and Taranaki by roads. A resolution was passed urging on the Government the necessity of immediately constructing a good oeach road from Stratford via the East toad by a line already surveyed to the Central JRailway route, and that a branch rdatf be similarly constructed by the Mimi North road until they interseot the Central. A committee was appointed to oarry out the resolution. Oonfssslon of ChUlt. Igte ■ Wanoantji, October 18. Prisoner Kenny, convicted of arson at the last sittings of the Supreme Court, confessed his guilt to the gaoler this morning of having set fire to the Commercial Hotel while in a slate of frenzy. He tried to put the fire out as soon as the deed was done, but found he could not. Sorrow was expressed for those injured. The Premier at Christohuroh. Christohuroh, October 18. The Premier arrived this morning and was interviewed by special depu* tations. He will attend the banquet to the Agent-General this evening, where the Governor, Mr Rolleston, and Sir John Hall will also be present.
A deputation, from the North Canterbury Education Board waited on the Premier to-day, representing the necessity tor expending 410,600 for new buildings in the district out of the vote ior that pui|>o«e passed laal session. The deputation expressed the opinion that rates levied toward the maiutenance of sohools should be resisted by the public. The Premier promised that the deputation's request should be laid before the Minister of Education at the earliest opportunity, when doubtless Canterbury would re* ceire au adequate proportion of the vote consistent with the necessities of other parts of the colony.

Aucrlanp, October IS. A man named McKee, an old resident of Waihou, was yesterday found dead in a ditch containing eighteen inches of water, near Te Aroha.
