Thiß afternoon the Bight Rev. Dr. Grimes, Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, laid the foundation stone of a residence for the Marist Brothers, lour of whom take charge of the parish acbool. His Lordship spoke briefly, promising to speak moie fully in the evening on *he determination of Catholics to provide their children, not merely with inßtruotiou, but education. The present ceremony was a practical protest against the materialistic, godless, and self-seeking tendencies of the century, and a preof of the Catholics' recognition of their duties to children and society. The Bureau of Industries has received applicatigns from 320 persons for employment on the Otago Central Railway works. Tbis number may be assumed to be in excess of the unemployed, as applications have been received from settlers about Middlemarch ; and also from those at present in employment temporarily who are desirous of exchanging it for work of longer duration. At the City Court today Mary Brown was charged with ill-treating her step-daugter nine years old. Medical evidence was given showing that the child was covered with bruises. The evidence of the family Bbowed that no unnecessary cbastisment had been administered, and that the wet dreas in which the girl went to school she put on of her own accord. The case was dismissed, the Bench cautioning the accused to treat the child with care owing to its weakly constitution.

The sealing case, in which Andrew Newton was charged with stealing £IOOO worth of skins belonging to Joseph Hatch, occupied the Magistrates Court all yesterday and up to luncheon to-day, and has been adjourned till 22nd October. The defence is that Mr Hatch did not carry out the agreement to give the men 15s per skin, and further, that all skins of regulation size, to which be was entitled under the agreement, were handed him.
