Auckland, October 7.
A meeting of the Oommittee of the Northern Railway League wbb held tonight, when Mr E. Mitohelson, who was present by invitation, announced that at a future meeting, when he was in possession of oertain information whioh he had asked of the Pnblio Works Department, he would dhow the reasons whioh had ' actuated him in advocating the construction of the North Island Trunk Railway by the Central route instead of the Stratford route. He was convinced that it would be in the in" terests not- only of Auckland, bat of the whole Colony, that the central route should be adopted. The Mayor, Mr Upton, who was in the chair, pointed ont, in reply to Mr Mitohelson, that what thp League wanted was railway communication between Auckland and Taranaki. The Stratford line should, he thought, be advooatpd, because it was more attainable than that by way of the central route, fiinoe it would cost much less. An Exeoutive Com" mittee was appointed, and the aoling* secretary, Mr Djcre, announced that the work of collecting public subscript tions in aid of the movement had been begun this afternoon, and that '416 had already been raised.
