MANGAONE NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.')

The weather here at present is delightful. The Antarctic frosts of July and August have disappeared, and the nights are now enjoyable, Occasional showers of Soring rain are beginniug to clothe the hills with verdure, whilst glimpses of warm and brilliant sunshine convince the most timid invalid that "gloomy winter's nooawa" in earnest. The enchanting witchery of a New Zealand landscape when bathed in floods of light is indesciibablr, nor can the charui of such a scene be experienced anywhere else beyond the Trossacks or Killarney. Truly this island of ourß has been very appropriately termed the "Emerald Gem of tho Antipodes," for it has a thousand Trossacks and Killarneys and Winderrueres; nor can a man travel ten miles through the country where the scenery does not rival Glaramara or Barrowdale. The lambing season on the whole has been satisfactory; in some cases remarkably so, the percentage going up to one hundred and fifty. A few sheep and early lambs died before the frost disappeared, but the losses on the whole have been trifling, and, from the appearance of stock, the majority ol the settlers anticipate the highest prices. The want of a suitable accommodation house is beginning to be felt in Mangaone. There is none between Eketahuna and Alfredton, and owing to the state of the roids at present travellers and tourists often find themselves much inconvenienced. The roads indeed are in a sad state, nor is there any sign of them improving. Our genial and obliging friend Mr. Edmunds got stuck in the slip a few days ago, and while he was being extricated a wag gravely suggested the formation of a company to purchase a steam launch, as no other mode of transit w»3 possible.—Of course this is not strictly true, for in ordinary weather horbemen have often been known to pass the swamp in safety, and in single file they present a very picturesque and interesting appearance, reminding one of a troop of Indian horsemen crossing the Amazon. The horses' heads and the upper part of the riders' bodies are seen lor a time like the long line of floating buoys in the Manakau harbour; but on reaching terra Jirma a few hours exposure to the sun converts them into Centaurshaped blocks of material which is; eften used with advantage in the construction of Mexican shanties. The riders, however, do not all appreciate this. Some of them are of a secular torn of mind, and it is said that on emerging from the swamp i they sometimes turn their facts to the Mr Acheson for plaintiff.. Claim, £3 13s Id. Judgment by default for amount claimed, with costs 21s, soli char's fee 21s. Frank Herd v. Tunuiorangi.—Mr Acheson for plaintiff, Mr Tate for defendant. This was a case in which plaintiff claimed £5 Is 6d for chaff cutting, but a contra account by the defendant was lodged. This was disputed. After the heanug of the evidence of the plaintiff, defendant, and several witnesses, judgment was given for the plaintiff for the amount claimed with costs 10s, and solicitor's fee 21s.
