BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, there being present his Worship the Mayor and Crs Perry, E. Chamberlain, Feist, Gapper, Dixon Mutrie, and Hessey. The minutes ot the previous ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Clerk of the Masterton Licensing Committee, recommending that a payment of £3 8s for his services for the current yaar be made to Mr J. J. Fraeth.—Ou the motion of Cr Gapper it was decided that a payment of £3 3s be made to Mr Freeth as suggested. From D. Wishart, requesting that certain works be done at his property.—Referred to the Works Committee. From E. Taylor, calling attention to the unfenced portion of the road abutting on his property in the Bishop's Reserve.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. From L. Young, requesting her name to be placed on the Burgess List.—The application was acceded to. From Jans Syversen, with a similar request.—Held over till next meeting. COMMITTEES. The report of the Fire Brigade, Gas and Lihrary Com mi tees was read, and the recommendations contained therein confirmed. The Works Committee was authorised to see to the reconstruction of a gate in the creek in Albert street. GAS TANK. The Mayor said the special meeting of the Council had decided to reconstruct the gas tank. An estimate of the cost had been prepared, and he now submitted it. The resolution of the special meeting that the gas tank be re-constructed was confirmed, and it was decided that the work be carried out under the supervision of the manager at the estimate given. ORDINARY. The Inspector of Nuisances was instructed to report upon a site in River Road for a rubbish dep&t. The Ulerk, in answer to Cr Gapper, said no reply bad been received from Mr Renall with reference to the filling in of the drain on A kura road.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act.
The Town Clerk was. instructed to call for tenders for the supply of timber to the Borough for the next twelve months.
Permission was given to the librarian to close the reading room for a day for cleaning purposes, and that tho necessary assistance as hitherto be obtained.
The Mayor Baid it had been suggested that tenders should be called for printing and advertising instead of as at present.
Cr Dixon: It would be separate tenders for job printing and advertising, I suppose ? The Mayor: I suppose so. I cannot see any reason to be dissatisfied with the present mode. Gr Gapper: To test the feeling of the meeting I will move that tenders be called for printing and advertising separately. Gr Dixon seconded.
Cr Gapper said the Fiuance Committee had decided that tenders be called.
Ttie Mayor said he could not see how the present system could be improved upon. He did not believe in undercutting. They had got their work done in the past as reasonably as possible.
Cr Dixon : There is I understand a third party in the field now. We might get our job printing done more cheaply. The Mayor : But the third man tenders at present. Cr Perry : If we receive tenders we need not advertise in both papers. Cr Feist: But the papers won't tender. We're tried before.
The Mayor: That's it. They'l; boycott us.
The motion was then put and carried, the Mayor alone dissenting. The meeting then adjourned.
