HOUSE of REPRESENTATIVES. TUESDAY, SEPT. 15. Tbe Hon. the Speaker took the chair at 2.80. PAYMENT OF MEMBERS. The Speaker read a long memorandum from Messrs Bees and Palmer, seeking to show that the salary of numbers for the present session was either JBlsoor £155 if the Acts of 1884 and 1887 were read together. His (the Speaker's) own idea, 4&wever, was that the salary should be £IOO. The paper was referred to the Government with a view to the opinion of the law officers of tbe Grown being taken upon it. FRUIT FARMS. B eplying to Mr Swan, the Minister for Lands said the Government were alive to the advantage of having settlers acquainted with the latest methods of fruit-growing. They had already done something in the mat* ter, and daring the recess they would consider tbe appointment of an efnflfc to assist settlers in the production i fruit.

BAILWAI EXTENSION. The Minister for Publio Works, in reply to the Hon. Mr Fergus, said he could not see bis way clear to obtain a report from tbe Railway Commissioners aB to the railway extension proposed in the Public Works State* ment. As a matter of faot, most of the works had previously been re* ported upon by the Commissioners, and tbe Government were satisfied that they had proposed no work which was not absolutely necessary. NEW BILL. The North Island Main Trunk Railway Loan Applicatioq»-Act Amendment Bill was introduced ~Ey the Native Minister and read for the first time.

CONDUCT OF BUSINESS. The premier moved that the standing Orders be ao far suspended for the remainder of the session as to allow of Bills being passed through all their stages at one sitting j of new business being taken, if necessary, «fter 12.80 a.m.; and of resolutions from Committees of Supply of Ways and Means, being: considered forthwith.—After some discussion the motion was carried by 88 to 20.

FACTORIES BILL. The report of the Conference on this Bill was presented by Mr Pinker* ton, and agreed to.

SUPREME COURT PBOOEDURE BILL. On the motion of the Minister for Jusiee this Bill (which is dasigned to enable the Registrar of- the Supreme Court at. Napier to act for the Supreme Court Judge in certain cases) was read the second time, and subsequently read a third time and passed. " '
