London, September 5. Alexandre Jacques, the taster, has completed 35 out of his 50 days' fast, and keeps very well. A man named Rhodes, employed as a sorter in the London Post-office, has been arrested on a charge of stealing 2000 letters, from which he abstracted in the aggrtgate a sum of £20,000, *3 well as a large number of cheques and post-office orders.
A sensation has been caused in Warsaw, owing to preparations which are being made to concentrate a large force within a fortnight. The reason of the mobilisation is not known.
A Russian commission is preparing an elaborate commercial treaty with Servia, and is arranging to establish a consulate in that country. The Rev. C. H. Spurgeoj, who had been gradually gaining strength from his recent severe illness, has suffered a relapse. The Times, in a eulogistic article on the Earl of Kintore's journey from Port Durwin to Adelaide, states that young peers of good physique and plenty of common sense make excellent Governors.

September 6. _ The Duke of Rutland has provisionally accepted the vacant portfolio of the Postmaster-General. Information has been received that during the recent riots at Tchang-sba, in China, a Belgian Priest and two Sisters of Mercy were murdered. The Times agrees with Lord Kintore that Chinese labour will be indis* pensable to develop the Northern Territory. . The military manoeuvres of the Austrian and French soldiers in Vienna and Paris respectively show that smokeless powder will come into extensive use in the field. Balloons, telephones, semaphores, and evolutional tactics were also practised. The Standard's Constantinople correspondent reports that Turkey has entered into a secret treaty affecting Bosnia and Egypt.
The Austrian and German newspapers are indignant at the diplomatic victory of Bussia in Tarkwy, and demand similar rights {respecting the passage of the Dardanelles for other Powers. They request that England should take the initiative in the matter.

Owing to severe storms in the city several persons weie drowned. The sewers being flooded caused thousands of rats to invade the houses.
The reported accident to the train conveying French troops to the manoeuvres is incorrect.
Berne, September 5,
It is now explained that the proposal to erect an observatory on the top ot Mount Blanc has been abandoned, as the proposers were unable to find rock for the foundations.

Mr Arnold White, representative of Baron Hirsch, has had a satisfactory interview with the Czar relative to the Baron's proposals in connection with his compatriots, PoBT-AC*PBiircis, September 6. The resignation of Eiamil Faeba, the Turkish Prime Minister, has resulted in a chauge of policy in Turkey, which has hitherto leaned towards the Triple Alliance. It is believed tbat the Sultan was much impressed by the reception accorded* to the French fie jt at Oronstadt
The Forte is preparing a circular respecting the arrangements with Russia concerning the Dardanelles, ind explains that the concessions were made to fa&cilitate narigation. The dismissal of the Grand Vizier and several of the Ministers was made in person by the Sultan, and has been brought about owing to the frequent instances of brigandage in some of which the Sultan himself has had to pay a ransom out of the privy purse. September 6. Toe disgraceof Eiamil Fasha is attributed in the capital to his policy with regard to the Triple Alliance. Djevad Fasha, the new Grand Vizier, is a favourite with Russia.
