Greytown, Monday,
Another old settler has gone 10 his rest. This time it is Mr Hugh ■ O'Connor, who for 34- years past has been a settler in the Wtiirarapa. He came out in the Aurora in 1840, and was in the employ of Lieut. ; -Governor Hare and alterwards of Governor Grey, but when the big earthquake came he thought the country was not safe and took bis passage for Australia. The vessel was wrecked, however, auJ Mr O'Connor lost his alknarrowly escaping a watery grave. BjpWeßolved to stay in the colony and crossed the Rimutaka to thetben -wilds of "the Waidrap. 1 ' At il-.rit time Greytown was being surveyed, and he assisted Mr McMannaway in its completion. He then took up a block under the small farm settlement and has lived there ever since. Some 11 months ago he lost his youngest daughter, _ Mrs Burns, and thi9, coupled with old age, told upon him greatly. He died at Wellington last Saturday morning. He leaves a widow, 5 sons, and one daughter, also 18 grand children. Mrs O'Connor is widely and favorably known, and her many friends will sympathise with her sincerely in the .loss she has sustained. The deceased was 76 years of age. The funeral takes place to- ' morrow (Tnesday; at 8 o'clock.
