VOLUNTEERING.
A deputation consisting of Major Sommerville (Wanganui) Major Donald (Masterton), and Captain Griffiths were introduced to the Hon the Defence Minister by Messrs Fisher and Duthie and Dz Newman, M.H.R.'s, yesterday, for the purpose»of asking assistance in obtaining and preparing a permanent ride range for the New Zealand Rifle Association, and the use of the warships frequenting the Colony. The Hon the Defence Minister was fully of opinion that if a colonial rifle range was to be established it should be near Wellington, as being the most central place. He was, however, unable to make any direct promise of peeuniary assistance, owing to such a large amount having to be taken from the Volunteer vote for the purchase of the Polhill Gully range; but as the matter was an important one, he would bring the | matter before the Cabinet as soon as possible,
