It is understood that Ministerialists are urging Mr J. W. Napier to become a candidate for the Waikato in. terest. The Liberal Association meet! on Thursday to consider the situation. Petitions were posted yesterday to Mr Bryoe from his Waikato constituents, urging him not to resign.

Dcnedin, September I. The Bruce County Council to-day passed a resolution protesting against the increase of honorarium to the members of the House; also against the taxation proposals, especially the graduated tax. It was also decided to communicate with Mr J. W. Thomson, M.H.R., asking him to convey to the Hon. John Bryce the Council's deepest sympathy with him, owing to the unfair treatment at the hands of a majority of the House, and their regret that the Colony should be deprived of his services at a time when men of his stamp can ill be spared.

Distressing Suioile.

Auckland, September 1. At noon to-day the dead bjjW-Of a man named John Ford was hanging by the neck. Deceased was a fish hawker sixty years of age, and resided in Parnell. tor some time past he has been suffering severely from rheumatism. Mrs Ford found her husband hanging at the back door in the bedroom. He had sot a staple and driven it in the wall and hung himself with a clothes line. He left the following letter addressed to bis. wife:—

•' My dear wife,—When you get this note I will be no more. Poverty and ill-health caused me to commit the rash act. I tried to work yesterday, but could not. I have brought trouble enough on you. That landlady said I was at work, and I waa not. I have brought you just Is 6d in eight weeks, so good-bye and God blesa you. May God have mercy on me."
