CORRESPONDENCE.

Sunday Trading. [to the editor.] Sib, —A letter appeared in yesterday's issue of the Dailt under the Steading " Sunday Drinking," signed "Orthodoxy," stating tint no less than a dozen inebriates were brought under his personal observation in the pablic streets yesterday (the Sabbath or Sunday), and expressing disappointment that the police cells were quite empty on the following morning, "but omitting to state whether the churcheßwere crowded; also asking an explanation from the police. If "Orthodoxy" is not ignorant he should know that the police, as public Officers, are debarred from replying to charges of this nature through the press, especially to correspondents shelter themselves under a nom deplume. The personal observations of the calumnator must be very personal indeed, and I think he would have Bhown a more Christian spirit by sailing the attention of the police to bis grievances, if existing, than by endeavouring to injure men who, not like " Orthodoxy," do their duty honestly and in a Christian spirit. I have taken upon myself to reply to " Orthodoxy," not as a supporter of drunkenness, which I abominate, but as one of the moderate party who do believe in Sunday saints and day subjects of his Satanic I am, &c, H. E. Eton. Masterton, September 1.
