The Wairarapa Daily TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1891.
From the report of a little meeting published in our last issue it would appear that tliere is a prospect of a sum of money being placed on the estimates this session to shorten the gap in the trunk line between Eketahuna and Woodville. Settlers in the latter township are naturally anxious that operations should he commenced from that end, but as usual the residents of Eketahuna are not disposed to have a march stolen upon theui, and are taking steps to show cause why the works should be commenced from their terminus. It is very desirable that the Government and the public sbculd be placed in possession of every consideration material to the point at issue, and settlers by bringing under notice the claims of their district are doing useful work. The. main point m the controversy seetqs to us to be the fact that construction from ihe Woodville end would specially benefit the Manawatu line, whereas work from this side would feed the Government line. We can hardly snppose that a contract would be let in the interests of the Company's line when those of the Government j line might be promoted. We do not envy the shareholders of the Manawatu line their good luck, but ths Government line, under the late Ministry, was certainly sacrificed to the private track, and it would be unreasonable to make any further concessions in the same direction. At the present time all the Napier traffic goes over the private line, when it ought to be passing through the Wairarapa. Had the late Government completed the Woodville-Eketahuna link instead of constructing the Gorge line it would have secured the very large traffic which now goes via Manawatu.
