PUBLIC MEETING.
Efcoteiuna-Wooivine Iteilvay.
A public meeting was held in Mr A. Anderson's Hall, Eketnhuna, oo Friday evening, to consider what steps should be taken to lay before Parliament the necessity of having the Gketahuna-Woodville 1 ail way line extended at once from the Eketahuna end. About thirty gentlemen were present. Mr Aulin was voted to the chair, and after explaining the object of the meeting called upon Mr Toobill.
Mr Toohill said hs was very sorry to see so few present, but hoped those present would do something in the matter, as if no immediate steps were taken, the Government might shelve the matter for the present, and then probably there would be no funds for the next five years. He would like to hear the views of any other gentlemen on the subject. Mr Aulin called upon Mr Selby. Mr Selby : Certainly we want the railway this end t Mr Toohill proposed to idjourn the meeting to that night week. Mr Felling proposed, That a Committee be appointed to canvas the district for names in favour of the railway.—Carried. The following Committee was appointed : —Messrs H. Aulin, Dowset Nielsen, Selby, F. D. Pelliug, C Brenmuhl, Murdoch, and Toohill. Mr Murdoch was appointed Secretary. Mr Dowsett moved that the following clauses be inserted in the petition :—l. It will open up a large block of land, the other side of Eketahuna. 2. It will enable the large block of totara, which is being ruined by fires, to be got out. 8. It will en* able all settlers to set at their lands. 4. The Government can let contracts cheaper this end. Mr Toohill proposed that the Committee meet on Saturday night week at 8 p.m., to see the result of the canvas.
The petition will be left at Messrs Jones' and Aulin's stores for signatures.
