What Superior Arms Will Do
London, August 27. Telegrams have been received by the Chilian Legations in London and Paris, stating that at the battle of Suniterous on Tuesday, the insurgents were placed between two fires, and suffered frightful loss. Conflicting accounts are still received, of the state of affairs in Chili, One report is that Balruaceda's triumph has been complete, and adds that he will probably annex Boliyia in revenge for the assistance afforded the rebels. The retreat of the insurgents is represented as impossible. Another account makes out that the insurgents have been continuously victorious.
The casualties among the Government troops at the passage of the Aconcagua are now stated to have heen 2500, and those of the insurgents 8000. JS'ewYobk, August 26.
The Herald's despatch reports that at the latest date the insurgents had surrounded Valparaiso on the land side, after 72 hours' continuous fighting. Though the loyalists numbered double the insurgent army, the latter was victorious, owing to its being armed with Remington and Winchester repeating rifles. The fighting round Valparaiso has not yet been renewed. The rebel commanders manoeuvred for the purpose of getting an opening to attack, but without success, and it is generally believed that the insure gents intended coup has proved a failure.
The majority of the people in Santiago and Valparaiso are rejoicing over the President's victory. The insurgents are said to be in the last extremity. Valparaiso, August 27. The Government troops at Valparaiso have been largely re-inforced and an attack will shortly be made on I the strongholds of the insurgents. Berlin, August 27.
