A special meeting of the committee of the Auckland Amateur Club, held to-day, decided to hold • benefit meeting on a Saturday ; after our representative footballers return from Taranaki, the proceeds to go in aid of sanding a team of New Zealand amateurs to England next rear to compete for the championships.

export trade to India. The trade of New Zealand from India is now represented by £200,000 a year, but little is being sent back in return. Our tinned meats for the Indian army, * and colonial oats for the cavalry and artillery horses ought to be in demand. The suggestion is favourably enter* tained.
The Hinemoa in Peril. Auckland, August 22 A telegram from Omapere says the 8.8. flinemoa, Captain Faifehild, left for Eaipara this morning. A. heavy sea was running and when fairly on the bar three successive breakers were observed to wash her deck.
The Weather ana the CropsB. ASHBUBTON, August 22. The weather cleared this morning after the best rain, with one exception, for three years. It has done immense gooil to the country.
Sir George Grey an!the Jew'sAuckland, August 22. The following letter of thanks from the Hebrew residents of Auckland is to be sent to Sir George Grey at Wellington for bis efforts on behalf of the .Russian Jews:—"To Sir George Grey, "<ij£.B., &c—Dear Sir,—Permit us, oiftehalf of the Hebrew residents of the. city, to tender to you our most grateful thanks and warm appreciation of your exertions on behalf of our persecuted co-religionists in Russia. We believe if your axample was closely follow d by other British Colonies good only could result. The non-expression of public opinion' exhibited by the large portion of the civilized world haß, in our opinion," resulted in strengthening the hands of the enemies of civil and religious liberty, «nd we feel that you have added another debt to the many we, as New Zealand colonists, owe you." The letter is signed by the larger number of the local Jewish residents.
** The raymoat of Female Toaoaers. Auckland, August 22. At the Board of Education meeting, the return ordered, showing what the cost would be, if female teachers were paid on the same scale as male tqachers, was submitted. The figures showed that it would involve an additional expenditure of £lo,oooa. year, viz., head teachers, £1420; assistant teachers, £7380 ; pupil teachers (131 at £10), £1540. After the members had briefly expressed their opinions for and against females being placed on the Fame footing as male teachers, the matter was deferred.
