Work for the Unemployed
An interesting report has just been presented by M. E. Tregear, officer in charge of the Bureau of Industries, to his Ministerial chief, upon the work of the Bureau for the month ending the 18th August. Mr Tregear saj'B the Bureau has been fully employed in sending out persons to employment, generally of a private character. The majority of the applicants came from Dunedin and Canterbury, and they have been forwarded to bush felling and road works in the Wellington rural districts. The distribution from Wellington was as follows:—-To Masterton, 51; Feilding, 55 ; Palmerston, 23; Woodvilie, 11; Wanganui,4B ; Eketahuna, 23; Hunterville, 11; Pahhtua, 33; Napier, 17 ; Feat hers ton, 15 ; Ettham, 26 ; Otaki, 28; Carterton, 9; Manutahi, 41; Kai iwi, 27; Levin, Inglewood, Greytown, Hawera, &c., 22; Hunterville railway works, 55 ; Government road works, 12; to the Christchurch Agency of the Bureau, 49; to Dunedin ditto, 56. The total number forwarded by the Bureau in the month was 637. In addition to these, 408 men are employed upon the Government relief woiks at Otago, Canterbury and Wellington, and 63 upon co-operative railway contracts in the South Islaud, making a total of 1108 men dealt with by the Bureau.
