MASQUERADE BALL.
On Friday night there was a large gathering of dancerß and onlookers at the Palace Theatre, Grey town, on the occasion of the Private Brass Band's annual Masquerade Ball, which was one of the most brilliant and charm* ing social functions that has been in Greytown for some time, in 6pite of the weather, which was anything but pleasant. The interior of the hall was entirely transformed, the decorations being of an effective and . tasteful character. The gallery had a very pleasing appearance, being dr&ped with flags and hung with the instruments of the band, while a lining of turkey red completed the picture. A dias for the musioians occupied the bottom end of the floor, Mrs M. Wood and Q. Fuller; Messrs Lundgyiat, of Uarterton, and, B. Stowel, of Wellington, violins £. Mugulre, Corbet \ Mr M. B. Varm ham, Clarionette, and Mr A. J Barnard double bass. The excellence of the mußic drew forth many complimentary remarks. The extras were played by Miss M. McMaster, Mr A. Bi}uny and Pearson'B Private Bras Band from The M.C.'s Messrs J, Ijucena, J. Maauire H Walden and L, Iv.taer, di"' special mention fqr the way in which they carried out their duties. The whole ot the stage was taken away thys allowing the full length of the building for dauoing. Of the supper room, whioh was looked after by Mrs E. Dunn and Mrs A. McMaster, cannot speak in too great terms a( praise. We must not forgot to mention that the Misses J. Greathead Dunn, and B. Thompson attended to refreshments in the corner of th'eMR""V To particularise the various costume! worn would be a matter of ltnpossi* bility. Horublow, Plantation Costume; W. Grey, Court Peer. Pearson's Band came down from Masterton in full fores and helped cosniderably to enliven the proceedings. After the ball •waa over they played one or two selections insida the Hall. We must not forget to mention the limelight, worked by Mr Barnard, which showed ofl the costumes to perfection. Thts Secret taries, Messrs J. R. Nicol and Mr R. Varnham, assisted by a large Committee, are to be complimented on the way the whole of the arrangements Were carried out.
