The Wairarapa Daily FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1891.

We have received two annual reports, one of a big Company, and the other of a little company, one in the main representing the big farmers, and the other the small farmers of the Wairarapa. Both, no doubt, work in perfect harmony, for is not Mr W. C. Buchanan chairman oi the one, and Mr W. Booth president of the other ? Big settlers and small settlers work splendidly together; it is only when ranting politicians persuade the smaller settler that his bigger neighbour is his enemy, that the pastoral :n*motf~"fcl the ruraf Pythias fall out. present instance the big Conpany, " the Wellington Meat Export" enterprise, does its big business in meat, and the little Company, the " Dalefield Dairy " venture, does a rattling trade in cheese, and no doubt in certain matters of storage and shipment they help each other in every possible way. The meat Company, we read, produced last year an export equal to 246,740 sheep of 601b each, and in spite of opposition is still marching onwards, reducing charges and increasing its facilities for freezing and despatching. Last year its profits amounted to 16 per cent, but only one half of this goes to the shareholders, the balance being retained to strengthen and develop the business. The record of the little Company is equally pleasant reading, though its paid up capital is only a matter of some thirteen hundred pounds, while the big one works on a paid up capital of thirty seven thousand pounds, but the little thirteen hundred pounder turns over money quickly, buys 805,941 gallons of milk, and makes 818,6591bs of cheese. During the past twelve months it divided nearly £SOOO, of which somewhere about £4OOO went into the pockets of the farmers who supplied the milk. Let us hope that both the big and little Company will flourish during the coming year. It is pleasant to turn from the mischief making at the General Assembly to themes like this. The former almost persuades us that the Colony w going to the dogs, but the latter is eminently re-assuring. We almost doubt whether political quacks can ruin a country where institutions abound like the pair we have referred to.
