Accidents anl Fatalities. * Auckland, August 17. By the capsizing of a boat containing a fishing party on the Opotiki bar Albert and Charles Hopkins, sons of Captain Hopkins, of the steamer Chelmsford, and Frank Hudson were drowned. Patrick Dougherty, a gumdigger, had a narrow escape from death at Kanohi this morning. As the Kaipara train came round the bend he was seen lying with his head on the rails. The driver whistled, shut off steam, and put down the brakes, but to no avail, as the cowcatcher struck him on the head, knocking him off the line. He is expected to recover. Railway Extension in the NorthRussell, August 17. The settlers from their decision oppose the Kamo-Hikurangi extension unless the through railway is commenced at both ends. They suggest that the through line be surveyed, even should such action delay the Kamo-Hikurangi line being placed on the present estimates.
