(By Diogenes).

' WAIRAKAPA V. THB BUSH. I L A match between the representative i teams of the Wairarapa and the Bush > Bugby Unions, was played on the 1 Worksop Road ground, Masterton, on Saturday last, which resulted in a , win for the former by fourteen points , (8 goals and 5 tries) to love. The result was not altogether unexpected , for there was really no comparison , between the relative strength of the i two teams. The Wairarapa boys were in the bast of form, whilst their 1 opponents had never before played -together. The local team was skippered by D'Arcy and the visitors by Frank Perry. Play commenced at 8.80, when Wairarapa kioked off, the Bush having the advantage of the wind. Baumber secured a mark in the visitors' twenty-fives, but very little advantage was gained, for Ussher also marked. Scrummaging ensued in the centre of the field, and D'Arcy made a neat little run. The Wairarapa forwards here made a brilliant rush, and McKenzie assuming possession fell over the line, drawing first blood for his team. The kick was taken by 0. Perry, but proved a failure. From the kick out the Bush players got on a deeper ite rush, and looked very like scoring. The situation, was however, relieved by J. Perry, who kicked into touoh. Soon afterwards C. Perry made a smart run and passed to Thompson, who was collared on the line, the visitors being forced. Some excellent passing was done by the Wairarapa backs, and the visitors were being kept constantly on the defensive, being forced twice in succession. Hodgins, by a smart run, inspired his team with fresh hope, conveying the leather to the centre of the field. The Wairarapa forwards, however, made one of their irresistible rushes, and one of the' bush backs mulling, Gray got hold of the ball, and running in seoured a second try. A pretty goal was placed by Thompson. The centre of the field was then for some time the scene of action, the visitors playing with great pluck and determination. From a mark secured by Bannister, C. Perry made an unsuccessful attempt at goal. The Wairarapa territory was soon afterwards invaded, but an accident to one of the visitors caused a break in the game. On the play resuming D'Arcy made an unsuccessful pot at goal, and the Bush was again forced. The leather was kept in the centre of the field for some time, bat a series of short runs on the part of the Wairarapa backs placed the visitors' goal line in danger. D'Arcy here made a brilliant run, and passing all the opposing backs succeeded in crossing the line. Thompson took the kick but failed. The ball having been again set in motion, Frank Polling gained considerable ground by a smart run, but the Wairarapa forwards were not to be denied, and soon reversed the position of affairs. From a loose scrum ; Gray again got possession, and eluding the opposing backs ran right behind. C. Perry, who took the kick, made a poor attempt to increase the score. With the score at six points to nothing, the Bush team played with the greatest determination, and in the last few moments of the j spell made it interesting for their ( opponents. Hodgins marked in the Wairarapa twenty-five, and F. Perry } took a kick at goal, but failed, the ] Yellows being forced down. When the whistle blew for half time play was iu the centre of the field. |

The second spoil bad hardly commenced when the skipper of the visitors (F. Perry) hurt his shoulder and was compelled to retire. This considerably weakened the visiting team, as Ferry was the mainstay cf the forwards. After a series of rushes on the part of the Wairarapa forwards, and some good passing by the backs, the bush team was forced. Almost immediately afterwards Tom Welch got hold of the ball from a loose scrum and running in secured another try for his team. C. Perry again took the kick, but was unsuccessful. The play had hardly resumed, when the Wairarapa forwards made a fine rush, and Baumber getting possession, made a dodgy run and crossed the line. The kick was taken by Thompson who placed another goal. The visitors, although they could not help realising they were beaten, played a plucky uphill game. Their collaring was really excellent, and the attempts of the opposing backs to score were on many occasions frustrated thereby. A series of packed scrimmages took place in the Bush territory, and Watson and D'Arcy made good rune. The visitors were then compelled to force. From a penalty kick D'Arcy very nearly succeeded in placing another goal. Boss, for the visitors, here distinguished himself by a capital run, and the forward division of his team backing him up, the Wairarapa territory was invaded. C. Perry, I however, got possession of the leather, land made the run of the day. Passing the whole of the opposing backs, he landed the ball fairly behind the posts, for which he was loudly applauded. Ba umber tsok the kick, but failed. Soon after the resuming of play, McKeazie secured a mark in the centre of the field, and following up the ball, almost succeeded in getting over. Baumber made an unsuccessful pot at goal, and the visitors were forced. From this out, play was hardly ever out of the Bush territory. D'Arcy negotiated a brilliant run from the fifteen flag,

and again succeeded in crossing the line. Hawke this time took the kick and increased the score to fourteen points. The visitors were twice forced after this, and McKenzie was within an ace of scoring, being collared on the line. When " no-side" was called the play was in the visitors' fifteens. The most conspicuous players for the victors were D'Arcy, 0. Perry, Gray, Watson and Day, and for their opponents Ross, Broughton, F. Perry, Usher and McCardle. Mr W. McKenzie, of Carterton, acted as referee, and Messrs Whatman and Godfrey as line umpires. The match played at Greytown between the Masterton Violets and theGreytown " Hard Cases,''resulted in a win for the latter by six points to love. The match between the Dunedin Alhambras and the Masterton Clab is to be played on Tuesday, the 25th insfc. The visitors are to be entertained at a smoke concert after the match.
