VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE.

Annual Ball. The sixth Annual Gall in connection with the Masterton Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Drill Hall last nipht, and was a success beyond the anticipations of the promoters, and may fairly be said to eclipse any previous gathering ever held Kfl&r the auspices of the Brigade. The Hall was beautifully decorated with hanging testooos of evergreen, pnlm, toi toi and other native plants. Here and there bright coloured flags were tastefully arranged against the mass of green, while on the walla hung in mbei-s' certificates apd other emblems belonging to the fire fighters. Several large mirrors, kindly lent by Messrs M. Caselberg and Co, P. Dickson, L. J. Hooper 00, and C. Sinitn and Co, (} fixed in suitable positions. j uhia, the well known "Brigade Boys" gave a tinisbing touch to tbe whole. Looking down the Hall the scene was a particularly brilliant one, and those who were simply present to look on only regretted that they were not among the dancers. It must have been very gratifying to Captain Hounslow, Secretaries Word and Cole and the men of the Brigade (who one and nil worked harmoniously to attain success) to find that people are waking up to a true appreciation of their efforts for the public good, and showed this practically by appearing at the Ball in good numbers. Little more need be As regards the refreshments the fact that the fair dames of Masterton were the caterers should be sufficient guarantee that, delicaoies abounded, and that tlrerb-jyas no stint of good things. The flooir was in splendid order, and the music 'extent, so there is little wonder that Wanting was kept up with spirit until close" the dawn of day. ~*
