CORRESPONDENCE.
i Aa Explanation. . [To the Editor.] Sir,—l see from your excellent ■ paper that the Inspector of Nuisances i in Masterton has awakened to a , sense of his duty with a vengeance, and is summonsing women for • neglecting to employ a nightman, i after they have put right everything., i else he has complained of. It' is a i great pity, sir, to see parsons highly ; endowed by nature for the positions they occupy going to such extremes in carrying put their duty. It is . mentioned by philosophers that the ' world was made for what it is—and I believe it was—and that every beast was made for its own particular use, the horse for strength and speed, the ass for stupidity, the hound for ' smelling, and so on. When I wen» into my shop in Queen Street it was in a filthy condition. I caused two cart loads of rubbish and rotten manure to be removed from the yard, and it was quite evident the Inspector had not been there for at least twelve months. In two sheds there was close upon two tons of potatoes in a rotten state, giving forth a most delicious odour. All the time I was there the Inspector
aia not turn up, so you wju see inas i for sixteen or seventeen month* be has baen neglecting bis duty, and has been receiving full pay. And now, I have scarcely arrived in Pahiatua before my wife is summoned for neglecting to employ a nightman. I would honour and respect a person who would do bis duty honestly and straightforwardly, but when a person who has been neglecting bis duty for about seventeen month* comes down with one fell swoop upon those who have put right all be has complained of, there is something mean and con-, temptible about it. lie says these are tbe first cases of the kind which have been brought into Court. Why so ? Has be been letting the others off with a caution ? Why not go on as he has been doing since tbe Borough wa3 formed? How long will the ratepayers put up with such business as this. I hope the Counoil will enquire into the matter at its next meeting.—l am, etc., Hugh & awhinay. ' Pahiatua, August Ist.
