The Wairarapa Daily WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, 1891.
We hear that Mr B. P. Perry of this town recently forwarded to the Government laboratory in Wellington a sample of a mineral water which he obtained from his property on the Upper Taueru. The result of the official analysis shows that the exhibit was a chlorinated water of some strength, containing a large percentage of sodic and calcic chlorides, with a faint ajkaline reaction. The Government analyst ia hia report remarks "that this should prove a useful water incases of skin diseases." This may or may not prove to be a discovery of some practical value. In the old world, the existence of aj mineral spring has transformed many an obscure spot into a palatial city, and though a mineral spring half a dozen miles put of Masterton may be of doubtful immediate importance, it has yet possibilities, and who knows but that some day it will become a sanatorium/ As Mr Perry has been intelligent and enterprising enough to obtain an analysis of the spring on his property, we trust he will go a little further and procure a reliable medical report upen its value as a remedial agent. Of course the Government analyst is not a medical expert, and does not profess to give other than a general opinion upon the use of a mineral water of this kind. The exact practical value of such a water can only be determined by a pompetent physician, and we shall be very glad to hear that a reference is made to some accepted medical authority. Possibly tests oi the efficacy of the Upper Taueru spring poujd be conveniently made at the Masterton Hospital, and we feel sure that if this be possible, Mr B, P, Perry will give every facility for such *n experiment to be tried.
The fact that Mr Powoall should have assisted the temperance party last evening by introducing personalities of a very undesirable kind into bis speech might pass without comment were ii not that tbe speaker we refer to happens to be tbe Mayor of this town. What may be excused in Mr Pownall cannot be pardoned in a Maypr, and we trust that when the solicitor of tbe Moderate party again asceDds the platform, he will either practice a little moderation, or else qualify himself for a free indulgence in Billingsgate by resigning bis position as head of the municipality.
