A three-roomed cottage on the Rifle Range, belonging to Duncan McLean, and occupied by a Chinaman named Ah Sue and his family, was burned down this evening, and a child of two years burned to death. The mother went to town, taking one child, and leaving the other at home. The father was away gardening. There is no explanation of the cause of the outbreak of the fire, which many thought was a mere fal Be alarm. Arrival of the Coptic Wellington, Wednesday. The Coptio arrived at 7.80 a.m. & She left Plymouth on June 18tb, Teneriffe on June 18th, Cape Town on July sth, and Hobart on Friday last. She had a smooth passage. She brings 53 passengers and a full cargo. Two hundred tons were landed at Hobart. Sadden Death. Greymouth, July 28. Shortly before 7 this evening Michael McDonnel, grocer, of Tainui street, while sitting by his own tireside, pitched forward, and died almost instantly. A doctor and clergyman wero in immediate attendanaco but too late. The Shop Houra Bill. Auckland, July 28. , It was brought under the notice of the Newton Borough Council that if the Shop Hours Bill passed the shops on the Archill side of the Great North road could keep open and those in the borough would be shut by law. It was deoided to communicate with the Premier to the effect that if the Act is intended to exclude road boards it should be amended to include them. At a meeting of Auckland tobacco* nists, it was resolved to ask the Auckland members to oppose the Shop Hours Bill so for as it refers to tobacconists. A petition is to be signed and forwarded in support of the resolution.
