SOCIAL GATHERING

St Matthew's SchoolroomThe social gathering held in St Matthew's Schoolroom last (Friday) evening was highly successful. The weather was fine, and the attendance except tionally good, the fair hex being particularly well represented. The result of the sale of work must have been exceedingly gratifying to the promoters of the gathering, nearly everything offered being disposed of. The feature of the evening was undoubtedly the production of "Cinderella " by a number of children, who, by their really clever perfor-

mance, reflected the greatest credit upon their trainers, the Rev and Mrs Paige. It is to be regretted, however, that the seating accommodation was not good, a large portion of the audience being unable to get so much as a glimpse of the performance. The piece itself ran smoothly throughout, the children fairly excelling themselves in the pourtrayal of their respective characters. The title role was taken by Miss Olive Jago, a charming little actress of about eight summers, whose interpretation of the part of "Cinderella" could not have been more faithful. From her all traces of nervousness appeared to have entirely departed, and she acted with gracefulness and ease throughout. Equally successful was Miss Alice Pay ton, who sustained tbe rather difficult part of " Godmother " with the equanimity of a professional. Miss Mary Boddington, us " Mother," and the Misses F. and Y. Boddington as Sisters Alricca and Charlotte, were also quite at home in their respective parts. Master W. Jago made a capital " Prince," and was ably supported by Master Louis Freeth as " Muley." Masters Percy Moore and Laurie Freeth as Gentlemen of the Court, completed a most powerful cast. The dancing of the children, ' who were attired in handsome costumes, was perfectien itself. At the conclusion of the piece, the audience showed its appreciation of the efforts of the performers by a round of applause. During the evening musical renditions were given by Misses Pearson, Payton, and Ada Freeth. A song by Mr Coleman entitled " Good Company " was rendered in excellent style, and was vociferously encored. The sale of work stall and toy .stall were presided over by ladies of the congregation, who were untiring in their efforts to make the gathering the success it undoubtedly was. Valuable assistance was rendered by the following ladies : Mesdames Arnott, Tatham, Fannin and Girdlestone; Misses Bennett, Parser, Eockcl, Smith, E. Bagge, Brown, Ada Freeth, Hathaway, Jago, Kelliher P. Lowes, Mason, Micol, Payton,, Pearson, llobins, and Yates. The following children took pavt in the performance ef "Cinderella" : Misses M., F,, and Y. Boddington, V. Bremncr, G. Brown, Delwood, E. Hooper, 0. Jago, N. Jenkins, Q. Powell, Sellar, Bhroder, A. Payton ; Masters Louis * and Laurie Freeth, W. Jago, P. Moore, L. Nicol, G. and J. Sellar, C VttlJaiice.
